HISTORY OF FACULTY
On Friday, August 24, 2012, Rector of Andalas University, Dr. Werry Darta Taifur, SE, MA, inaugurated the establishment of Faculty of Dentistry, the 13th faculty in the university and the second to be legitimized in 2012. The inauguration was attended by the founders, the initiators, and those who were involved in the writing of the proposal of the founding of the Dentistry Department and the proposal of the establishment of the hospital of teeth and mouth which is based on the standards determined by the Indonesian Medicine Council. It was also attended by the Head of the Health Department of West Sumatera, the Director of Dr. M. Djamil Public Hospital, the Head of Health Department of Padang, and the head and all management staff of Indonesian Dentistry Association of West Sumatera. All the vice rectors and most of the vice deans in the Andalas University also attended the inauguration. The presence of all the leaders and the invited guests clearly showed that the establishment of this faculty was supported by various elements.
As a new faculty, there might be questions arisen related to the commencement of this faculty, especially those related to the quick process of and the people behind the establishment. Thus, to make it transparent for public, it is necessary to explain the process of the establishment, starting from the idea of the establishment to the inauguration of the Faculty of Dentistry on August 24, 2012.
The process of the establishment of the Faculty of Dentistry can be divided into 4 stages: (a) preparing the establishment of Dentistry Department, Faculty of Medicine, Andalas University, (b) providing facilities and infrastructure, (c) conducting dentistry undergraduate program, (d) transforming the Dentistry Department into the Faculty of Dentistry. All stages are chronologically described below:
Preparing the establishment of Dentistry Department.
The founding of Faculty of Dentistry was initiated by the effort of the Indonesian Dentist Association in West Sumatera who proposed the establishment of Dentistry Department, Faculty of Medicine to the Rector of Andalas University in the middle of 2006. Actually, this idea had been previously proposed by drg. Haryadi Mangkuto, Sp. BM. as the Head of Regional Management of Indonesian Dentistry Association(1999-2005) in a committee meeting, which was also proposed to the current Dean of Faculty of Medicine. However, the idea has not yet got a serious response from the Faculty of Medicine and some other parties. Thus, the idea of founding the Dentistry Department was proposed again by drg. Sylfianti, the Head of Indonesian Dentistry Association (2005-2008), in a National Workshop on Health in Batam to the current Dean of Faculty of Medicine, Prof. dr. Fadil Oenzil, Ph.D. SpGK. This time, the proposal got a serious response from the Dean of Faculty of Medicine, the Head of Health Department and also the Director of Dr. M. Djamil Public Hospital, who were also present at the workshop.
To convince the Rector of Andalas University, Prof. Dr. Ir. H. Musliar Kasim, MS with the idea, on November 2006, with the financial support from the Vice Rector for Financial affair, Dr. Werry DartaTaifur, some of the management of Indonesian Dentistry Association, drg. Haryadi Mangkuto, SpBM, drg. Febrian MKM, drg. Dedi Sumantri and drg. Sylfiani, went to Bandung to meet the Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry of Padjajaran University, Prof. Dr. drg. Ekky S.Soemantri Sp, Ortho. The purpose is to discuss some assistances from the Faculty of Dentistry of Padjajaran University on the preparations for the establishment of Dentistry Department in Andalas University.
On January 5, 2007, the Rector of Andalas University issued a decree on the founding committee of Dentistry Department, Faculty of Medicine, and Andalas University. The committee consisted of some staff from Faculty of Medicine, the management of Indonesian Dentistry Association, the Dr. M. Djamil Public Hospital, and the Health Department of West Sumatera. The head of the committee was Dr.dr. Masrul, M. Sc. Sp GK who at the time also acted as the Vice Dean for Academic Affair of the Faculty of Medicine. The members of the committee from the Faculty of Medicine were Dr.drg. Isnindiah Koerniati and drg. Mustafa Noer, MS, from M. Djamil Hospital, was drg. Haryadi Mangkuto, Sp BM, drg. Riflaini, and drg. Hartini Syah, from Indonesian Dentistry Association, were drg. Febrian, MKM, drg. Dedi Sumantri and drg. Sylfiani, and from the Health Department was drg. Bachtarudin.
On January 24, 2007, for the first time, the founder held a committee meeting in the meeting room of Faculty of Medicine. The meeting was attended by the current Rector of Andalas University, Prof. dr. Ir. H. Musliar Kasim MS, the Head of Health Department of West Sumatera, dr. Rosnini Savitri, M. Kes, the Director of dr. M. Djamil Public Hospital, Dr. Sukiyar M. Kes., the Vice Rector for Academic Affair, Prof. Dr. Novezar Jamarun, MS, the Dean of Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Dr. Fadil Oenzil Ph.D., Sp.Gk, and all the committee members. The meeting among other decided that the department must be part of the Faculty of Medicine.
